FileMaker 14 - first impressions from the Winterthur conference

The original post covered the 2014 conference and expectations for the next version of FileMaker. We preserve the meeting’s context and technical topics that still help frame useful questions about an application.

Comment and context: September 2026

Context of the first presentation

According to the original report, on October 18, 2014, during a meeting in Winterthur, the direction of development of Pro, Server and Go was presented. Part of the presentation was confidential, so the text mainly contained impressions and expectations.

We do not present that date as the public release date of version 14. The announcements and the subsequent release description are two different materials.

Topics that went beyond product news

The archived program featured list efficiency, custom functions, permissions, passing parameters to scripts, security, separation model and modular database structure. Layout design, WebDirect, and integration with devices such as scanners and scales were also discussed.

The Go area covered mobile applications, QR codes, location and alternative access methods. Old merger considerations should not be transferred to today's licensing terms.

Pro and interface

Layouts, lists, performance and data organization - topics of the workshop and expectations for the development of the platform.

Go and devices

Mobile work, QR codes, localization and cooperation with scanners and scales in the context of contemporary possibilities.

Developer skills

Custom functions, script parameters, permissions, separation model and modular structure of the solution.

What of this relationship is useful today?

When modernizing, it is still worth checking the data context, expensive calculations, permissions and interface readability. Just changing the version does not solve the design bugs.

We have collected details of the historical release on the FileMaker 14 website. If the solution comes from that period, the first step is to audit dependencies and test on a copy.

  • Identify the application release and extensions you are using.
  • Restore representative jobs on a copy of the data.
  • Check performance, permissions and interface after changing the environment.

Technical and business context of the 2014 conference

The previous report compared expectations for version 14 with changes known from FileMaker 12 and 13: work with SQL, web publishing, styles, and application stability and performance. This is the context of the pre-release discussion, separate from the subsequent product specification.

The program included financial calculations, currencies, VAT, analysis and statistics, Pro and Server extensions, script commands and Windows Server environments. The Go section discussed QR codes, GPS, mobile alternatives and the connection models of the time.

  • Business plan and development of real estate development activities.
  • Customer acquisition, further cooperation and social marketing.
  • Copyrights for databases and rules of cooperation in their creation.
  • Practical technical topics: permissions, data separation, modularity, systems and integration with devices.
